Marlink enhances safety solutions for Morocco Desert Challenge competitors

Marlink, the global leader in managed services for business-critical digital solutions, has expanded its support for the Morocco Desert Challenge (MDC) rally raid with new communication and navigation capabilities designed to further improve competitor safety and race management in extreme desert conditions.

Building on a long-standing partnership with rally organiser Gert Duson, Marlink continues to provide satellite connectivity and its innovative real-time tracking and security services for one of the world’s most demanding motorsport events.

For the 2026 edition of the MDC, Marlink introduced IriChat, a secure live chat application which enabled participants on the Adventure Raid route to communicate directly with race control and organisation vehicles using their smartphones (for iOS and Android). For a racer stranded in the dunes, that connection can be the difference between a quick rescue and a long wait.

The capability allows competitors to instantly report mechanical problems or medical emergencies and receive operational updates, even in areas without terrestrial connectivity. By extending advanced communications to the more open adventure category, the solution further strengthens safety coverage for all participants.

Marlink also introduced a lightweight mobile navigation and visualisation service for the 2026 edition, allowing rally teams, media personnel, and event organisers to follow selected racers in real time from smartphones, tablets, or laptops without requiring dedicated software installation. Accessible through any internet connection, the solution simplifies operational oversight and improves situational awareness in the field.

These capabilities are fully integrated into Marlink’s central monitoring platform, which consolidates live locations, alerts, and race timings to support race coordination and crisis management. The platform significantly reduces emergency response times while also powering the public live tracking and mapping service available through the organiser’s website.

In addition to its digital services, Marlink supports the event with turnkey satellite connectivity and dedicated field engineers responsible for installing and maintaining tracking equipment, assisting operational staff at race headquarters, and training the organiser’s technical teams.

Since 2018, competitors in the Rally Pro and Adventure Raid categories have relied on Marlink’s IriTrack and SmallTrack systems for monitoring and tracking that support safety operations, race coordination, and emergency response across remote terrain. When onboard sensors detect an accident, the systems automatically send alerts over satellite networks, helping race control coordinate a faster response.

The enhanced safety ecosystem also includes integrated voice calling, automatic incident detection, geofencing, speed monitoring, text messaging, and emergency alert functions. Built-in sensors can automatically notify race control if a vehicle overturns or becomes immobilised, enabling faster rescue coordination and more efficient response operations.

The Morocco Desert Challenge is, after the Dakar, one of the major rally-raid (cross-country desert racing) events held annually in April in Morocco. It is considered one of the largest and most accessible desert rallies in the world, attracting both professional racers and amateur teams. It's a linear long-distance race, open to race cars, trucks, side-by-sides and motorbikes and generally hosts between 800 and 1200 people from 30 nationalities in the bivouac.
