Fifty years of keeping the world connected
This year marks 50 years since the opening of Eik Teleport, a milestone that reflects the evolution of satellite communications and global connectivity.
Long before always-on connectivity became an expectation, it was a challenge that required vision, engineering expertise and the confidence to build infrastructure where few believed it was possible.
This week marks 50 years since the opening of Eik Teleport in Norway, one of the foundations of Europe's satellite communications industry and today an important part of Marlink's global network.
When Eik began operations on 7 July 1976, Norway became the first country in Europe to operate a national telecommunications network via satellite. The site played a critical role in connecting offshore energy operations in the North Sea, supporting communications that helped transform one of the world's most demanding industries.
Half a century later, the world looks very different.
Today, ships operate as floating offices, offshore platforms rely on uninterrupted communications, and businesses expect secure, resilient connectivity wherever they operate. Behind those expectations are decades of investment in infrastructure, engineering expertise and operational excellence.
Eik has evolved alongside the industry itself. What began as Norway's first satellite gateway has grown into one of Marlink's key global teleports, supporting more than 23000 connected customer sites across more than 30 countries and forming part of a worldwide organisation of more than 1,700 employees.
Today, around 90 specialists work from Eik across teleport operations, network operations, engineering, cybersecurity, software development, project management and customer support, ensuring customers remain connected around the clock.
Its location remains as important today as it was fifty years ago. Positioned with clear southern visibility, minimal radio interference and close to Norway's offshore energy industry, Eik continues to provide an ideal environment for resilient satellite communications.
While technology has evolved from early Intelsat systems to today's hybrid, software-defined and multi-orbit networks, one thing has remained constant: delivering reliable communications where they matter most.

Behind every connection is a team of specialists whose expertise keeps critical communications running every day. To mark Eik's 50th anniversary, we asked three members of the team to share their perspective.
Question:
Customers depend on Eik every day, often without seeing everything that happens behind the scenes. From your perspective, what does delivering quality really mean?
Often, it's about listening to what isn't being said by the customer / end user, both technically and emotionally. A customer may report a technical issue, but behind that issue there may be a need for better tools, clearer guidance, a different solution, or someone willing to push hard with vendors to find a permanent solution. Fight the good fight, on behalf of the customers. Or just building the confidence they need to operate the system. Quality means having people who understand the customer's environment and the impact an outage or technical issue can have on their operations. It means not wasting the customer's time, because they have their real job to do as well... Our responsibility is to make technology work so they can focus on what matters to them and their business. At Eik, we are fortunate to have years of experience and expertise in-house. We understand the world our customers operate in, and that allows us to provide support that goes beyond fixing faults, we help customers succeed in their day-to-day operations. And we know the customers, and they feel they know us when they call or email, so we need to make sure we keep that and build that trust and bond, whilst being efficient and transparent with e.g technological challenges or restraints. With great support from the “Marlinkers” all over the world to take great pride in what they do.
Question:
People expect connectivity to simply work. What does it take behind the scenes at Eik to deliver that level of reliability every day?
Ever since 1976, Eik's most important trademark has been the quality of our services. But how do we create the quality people expect every single day?
The answer lies not only in the technology, but in our people - Regardless of your role – we all pull together. A good working environment is the very foundation for reliable delivery. It is the togetherness, the well-being, and the unique sharing of experience between colleagues that over time ensures the competence we need.
Then, of course, it is important that we have a robust and redundant infrastructure/ traffic systems so that the customer does not experience disruptions in the service even if the equipment fails. Good customer support, NOC and monitoring/tools is also an important element and contributes to a secure delivery and quality Working at a Teleport can be compared to being crew on a vessel, operations run 24/7/365, and everything simply must work to the customer's satisfaction.

As satellite communications continues to evolve, what excites you most about Eik's role in shaping the future of global connectivity?
At Eik Teleport, we have the flexibility to test and deliver the latest connectivity solutions for our maritime customers. What excites me most is how Eik combines 50 years of experience with the expertise of more than 90 full-time specialists, making it a strong hub for testing new technologies and solving real customer challenges. There is also an entrepreneurial mindset at Eik, with a clear focus on delivering what vessels depend on most: reliable, high-quality connectivity. That same experience is now being applied beyond the maritime sector, supporting testing and operations across Marlink’s broader technology landscape and helping shape the future of global connectivity.
