Pharming: Fake sites, real danger

Article 9 from the series "It’s a jungle out there: Navigating the digital danger zone"

Pharming involves the silent manipulation of the Domain Name System (DNS), redirecting users to fake websites that appear identical to the legitimate ones.

Examples from the field:

  • A spoofed electronic chart portal delivers malware instead of navigation data
  • A fuel ordering platform is compromised and used to harvest login credentials
  • Navigation data is rerouted to an incorrect IP address, disrupting voyage planning

How Marlink protects against it:

Secure DNS, DNSSEC, validation and encrypted communication via Marlink’s secure VPN significantly reduce the risk. We also recommend maintaining a “whitelist” of trusted sources on shipboard systems.
