End of Windows 10 support signals growing cyber threat to IT/OT systems

Announced by Microsoft in 2021, this month marks the official end of support for Windows 10. From this month forward, millions of devices around the world will no longer receive vital security updates.

For many organisations, upgrading isn’t as simple as flipping a switch. Windows 11 demands modern hardware and replacing thousands of operating systems overnight is not only financially demanding but also operationally disruptive. According to Marlink cyber data, market research indicates that a significant part of vessels in the maritime sector are still operating on Windows 10 as of 14 October .

  OS Category% Combined
Windows 1151.42 %
Windows 1040.36 %
Windows Server5.65 %
Windows 72.15 %
Windows 8.x0.42 %

While Microsoft does offer extended security updates, the costs, starting at $61 per device per year and increasing over time, can quickly spiral into millions for larger enterprises.

The cyber security risk

Without regular patches, unsupported Windows systems become a ticking time bomb. Cyber criminals thrive on exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities and attackers will be quick to exploit these newly exposed systems. The danger isn’t confined to IT networks.

In operational technology (OT) environments including original equipment and large systems manufacturers, legacy Windows machines often run critical applications. If compromised, the impact can extend far beyond data loss, potentially disrupting operational, navigation or even safety systems.

What can be done?

The reality is that many businesses cannot migrate immediately. Compatibility constraints, hardware dependencies and cost factors leave organisations exposed, with few obvious paths forward.

Alternatives exist, though each comes with trade-offs. Windows 10 LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) editions continue to receive updates beyond today’s cut-off, and solutions like 0patch provide cost-effective ‘micro-patches’ for vulnerabilities even after official support ends.

These can act as a stopgap, but they require proactive planning and careful integration into existing IT/OT security frameworks.

Marlink’s recommendation

The end of Windows 10 support is more than a software update; it’s about managing cyber security risk.

Organisations need a structured risk strategy to secure both IT and OT environments against the heightened threat landscape. At Marlink, we recommend a layered approach:

  • Assess & map exposure: Identify all unsupported systems across IT and OT environments;
  • Mitigate with alternatives: Where immediate upgrades aren’t possible, consider LTSC, 0patch, or network segmentation as temporary shields;
  • Strengthen defences: Implement advanced cyber controls such as endpoint detection and strict access controls to reduce the attack surface;
  • Plan ahead: Develop a clear roadmap for company-wide migration, avoiding last-minute costly decisions.

Unsupported Windows 10 devices are more than just a technical issue, they are a business risk. With the right strategy, organisations can stay secure while planning their transition.
