The Possibility Platform: unlocking a new era for remote operations

Carlos Carbajal – Chief Portfolio & Innovation Officer – Marlink Group.

A few years ago, the idea of running real-time digital operations from a vessel or a mining site hundreds of miles away would have sounded far-fetched. Today, we are monitoring live sensor data from multiple systems, engineers are updating software remotely, remote operators are using modern collaboration cloud-based tools and shore-based teams are managing vessels as seamlessly as if they were in the next room.

This is not simply the result of better connectivity; it reflects a new digital mindset. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations have changed what’s possible for remote operations, unlocking bandwidth and latency levels that were once unimaginable. But technology alone doesn’t create transformation; the real shift comes from how organisations use it to redefine their operations.

From connection to convergence

For decades, remote operations (from shipping to mining to energy) were designed to overcome limitations. Bandwidth dictated what could be done. Systems were isolated. Data was delayed or incomplete. The focus was on hardware and maintenance, not on integration and innovation.

That’s changing fast. The new generation of network solutions is enabling what we call the Possibility Platform :  a secure, intelligent, and flexible foundation that empowers remote operators to build their own digital ecosystem. Instead of separate, static systems, they now have dynamic platforms that evolve with their business needs.

At Marlink, we’ve seen this evolution first-hand through our work with hundreds of customers across maritime and energy sectors. They no longer ask, “Can we connect this system?” but “What can we build next?”

A mindset powered by flexibility

The real revolution isn’t only in the technology; it’s in the mindset. Successful operators are moving from proprietary, fixed systems to open, co-managed architectures. They want the freedom to select applications, integrate partners, and innovate on their own terms.

Flexibility is now the defining measure of digital maturity. Cloud access, cyber resilience, and edge computing are no longer optional, they are the core enablers of remote operations. The same platform that connects an asset to the cloud can also protect it, providing proactive cyber solutions and delivering real-time security monitoring, predictive maintenance, or AI-driven analytics.

This flexibility transforms the economics of remote operations. With digital tools available on demand, operators can scale faster, respond to market shifts, and unlock entirely new efficiencies.

Data-driven transformation

The numbers tell the story. Over the past three years, maritime data usage has more than tripled, driven by the surge of new digital tools, video collaboration, social media and cloud integration. A single vessel can now generate gigabytes of operational data daily and the challenge is no longer about transmission, but about value.

The Possibility Platform allows operators to turn data into decisions. Whether it’s optimising routes, monitoring emissions, running applications, managing compliance or ensuring cyber security, insight is now happening at the edge, closer to where operations take place. That’s a profound change.

We’re seeing a convergence between remote and terrestrial business networks. The digital divide that once separated them is disappearing. What was once a limitation is becoming an advantage; remote operators are now beneficiaries of distributed, intelligent systems.

Our role in the journey

As a company deeply embedded in this transformation, Marlink’s role is not just to deliver connectivity, but to enable possibilities in the digital space. Through our managed services, we help customers design the platforms that fit their specific needs by combining network, cyber security, cloud access, and IIoT applications into a unified, co-managed environment.

But the most powerful insights come from our clients themselves. They’re the ones showing us what’s next, from autonomous maritime systems to remote diagnostics and smart maintenance. The future of digital operations isn’t prescribed by a vendor; it’s built on collaboration, shaped by the people who operate in the most challenging environments on Earth.

Built for the future

Its clear that the era of limited connectivity is over. The next chapter is about deeper integration, stronger intelligence, and the imagination to build what comes next. Our role is building platforms that empower people to achieve more, wherever they operate.

The Possibility Platform is not a product. It’s a philosophy, one that puts control, flexibility, and innovation in the hands of operators. And as we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible, we’re reminded that the real value of technology lies not in what it does, but in what it enables.
